1. a statement of equality between two quantities, indicated by using the equal sign (=) between them. Examples: 4 + 5 = 9. (4 × 8) + 12 = 44. C = 2πr.
2. an expression using chemical formulas and symbols to show quantitatively the substances used and produced in a chemical change. In “HCl + NaOH = NaCl + H2O,” HCl and NaOH are the reacting substances, and NaCl and H2O are the resulting products, the sign = being read “produces” or “gives.”
